It is the policy of the University, so far as reasonably practicable, to promote a working environment which is healthy and safe for staff, students and visitors, and for any other persons who may be affected by the work of the University. This policy will be implemented in consultation and co-operation with staff and students, all concerned being given the necessary information, instruction, training and supervision to enable them to carry out their work safely.
In formulating its general policy, the University will be guided by the recommendations in the appropriate Codes of Practice published from time to time by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA) and the Universities Safety Association. It will seek at all times to have policies relevant to the current activities of the University, seeking to eliminate or minimise the risks arising from such activities.
It is recognised that the Health and Safety at Work Act has been framed primarily to cover the relations between employer and employed with respect to health and safety at work and that the legal position of students may not be fully protected by the Act. The University, however, declares that its policy in matters of health and safety towards the students of the University will be guided by the same considerations as those which apply to its employees as prescribed in the Act.
We believe that an excellent organisation is by definition a safe organisation and since the University is committed to excellence, it follows that minimising risk to people, physical resources and our good reputation in Research and Higher Education is inseparable from all other organisational aims and objectives.
